A domain name is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority or control within the Internet. Domain names are formed by the rules and procedures of the Domain Name System (DNS). Any name registered in the DNS is a domain name. Domain names are used in various networking contexts and application-specific naming and addressing purposes. In general, a domain name represents an Internet Protocol (IP) resource, such as a personal computer used to access the Internet, a server computer hosting a web site, or the web site itself or any other service communicated via the Internet.

Name servers are specialized server on the Internet that handles queries or questions from your local computer, about the location of a domain name's various services.

A country code top-level domain (ccTLD) is an Internet top-level domain generally used or reserved for a country, sovereign state, or dependent territory identified with a country code.

.np is country code domain extension for Nepal.

A domain name registry is a database of all domain names and the associated registrant information in the top level domains of the Domain Name System (DNS) of the Internet that allow third party entities to request administrative control of a domain name. Most registries operate on the top-level and second-level of the DNS.

Mercantile Communications Pvt. Ltd. (register.mos.com.np) is domain registry for Nepal.

Via register.mos.com.np, all domain registrations/modifications can process.

Domain registrations under .NP ccTLD is free of cost.

Domains are registered on a first-come-first-serve basis but terms and conditions apply.

Domains can be registered only under the following secondary NP domains: com.np, org.np, edu.np, net.np, gov.np, name.np, biz.np, travel.np, asia.np, coop.np, pro.np and mil.np. More information on .np ccTLD

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical decentralized naming system for computers, services, or other resources connected to the Internet or a private network. It associates various information with domain names assigned to each of the participating entities. Most prominently, it translates more readily memorized domain names to the numerical IP addresses needed for locating and identifying computer services and devices with the underlying network protocols. By providing a worldwide, distributed directory service, the Domain Name System is an essential component of the functionality on the Internet that has been in use since 1985.

  • Local Entities (company/organization)
  • Nepalese citizens
  • Multinational companies who legally exists in Nepal

NOTE:- A company/organization can only select domain names based on the company/organization's name, product's name, service's name and brand name.

In case of local entities :

  • Certificate of registration of company/firm/partnership/organization

In case of foreign entities registered in Nepal :

  • Certificate of registration of branch or liaison office or
  • Certificate of affiliation with Social Welfare Council.

In case of non-incorporated entities doing business in Nepal such as Permanent Establishments or Non-incorporated Joint Venture Entities: PAN registration certificate.

In case of any entities (local or foreign)having business interests in Nepal:
Certificate of trademark registration in Nepal or Official filing receipt of trademark application issued by the Department of Industry (to be supported with actual trademark registration certificate within 3 years of domain registration)

NOTE: - A personal domain name should be based only on applicant’s name as mentioned in below documents:-

  • Nepalese citizenship or passport or driving license or voter's card or
  • Non-Resident-Nepalese ID card or
  • Nepalese resident visa for foreign nationals

Note: For gov.np domain, administrative process is maintaining by National Information Technology Center. For more information: www.nitc.gov.np

Administrative is the primary contact address of domain owner that included Name, Company name, Address, Phone, Email address etc.

Domain registration process usually takes 3/4 business day or more, depending on the number of domain registration backlog. All documents submitted need to be verified and authenticated, hence, sometimes domain registration can take longer time.

Technical Contact is the technical person who maintains the requested domain. If someone wants alternative contact address other than administrative contact then he/she may use this space.
